Calculate the Dilution

Enter the bleach percentage listed on your bottle, for example 6.5.

Enter the sodium hypochlorite percentage printed on the bottle you are using. The calculator gives the volume ratio needed to reach a 0.6% sodium hypochlorite solution: one part bleach to the stated number of parts water.

“Parts” means whatever unit you are measuring in, as long as it is the same unit on both sides. One cup of bleach to nine cups of water is the same ratio as 100 mL to 900 mL.

Sodium hypochlorite is not compatible with every dental unit. Before running any bleach solution through your lines, confirm your dental unit manufacturer’s instructions for use permit it, and follow your treatment product’s protocol where one exists.

Why a Fixed Recipe Does Not Work

Why can't I just use a standard bleach-to-water ratio?

Because household bleach is sold at several different sodium hypochlorite concentrations, and a ratio written for one concentration produces the wrong strength with another. A recipe calling for 1:9 with a 6% product delivers roughly half the intended strength if the bottle in your hand is 3%.

A fixed recipe can fail in either direction. Too weak and the biofilm survives, so the next test fails and the shock gets blamed. Too strong and you are running a more aggressive solution than intended through equipment that may not tolerate it.

Never Mix Chemicals

Do not combine sodium hypochlorite with other cleaning products. Mixing bleach with acids or ammonia releases hazardous gases.

Equipment Compatibility

Confirm your dental unit manufacturer permits sodium hypochlorite. Some water systems and components are not compatible with it.

Follow your treatment product instructions and local ordinances for disposing of the flushed solution.
