Dental Waterline Shock Treatment: When and How
When to shock dental unit waterlines, how shocking differs from daily maintenance, and what to do if lines resist treatment.
ReadHousehold bleach is sold at several concentrations, so a recipe written for one bottle can be wrong for another. This calculator uses the concentration printed on your bottle.
Enter the sodium hypochlorite percentage printed on the bottle you are using. The calculator gives the volume ratio needed to reach a 0.6% sodium hypochlorite solution: one part bleach to the stated number of parts water.
“Parts” means whatever unit you are measuring in, as long as it is the same unit on both sides. One cup of bleach to nine cups of water is the same ratio as 100 mL to 900 mL.

Because household bleach is sold at several different sodium hypochlorite concentrations, and a ratio written for one concentration produces the wrong strength with another. A recipe calling for 1:9 with a 6% product delivers roughly half the intended strength if the bottle in your hand is 3%.
A fixed recipe can fail in either direction. Too weak and the biofilm survives, so the next test fails and the shock gets blamed. Too strong and you are running a more aggressive solution than intended through equipment that may not tolerate it.
